0
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:29,000
It takes up to three hours by boat to get to the village...

1
00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:33,000
situated by the banks of the Maroni.

2
00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:37,000
Antekum Pata, a tiny patch of France in amerindian land.

3
00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:40,000
There are 300 inhabitants at most...

4
00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:43,000
...and around 100 children.

5
00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:48,000
In the heart of Antekum Pata, days are paced by school.

6
00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:52,000
ok, like whom are we going to get into the classroom?

7
00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:56,000
- like a jaguar - - yes, like a jaguar, and does he make any noises?

8
00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:00,000
- No! - - How does he walk? Very quietly.

9
00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:05,000
Since 8 years, Maëlle teaches reading and writing to this little indians.

10
00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:07,000
I turn and turn, I dance the boogie-woogie...

11
00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:10,000
Singing and wearing the calimbé, the traditional dress...

12
00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:13,000
...they are babbeling their first french words.

13
00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:18,000
- A step forward, a step backwards and I turn and turn and turn...

14
00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:21,000
- Weahhhh...!

15
00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:25,000
Their mother tongue is Wayana, the dialect of the village.

16
00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:28,000
When these little french children start school,...

17
00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:31,000
...they are learning all about their native language.

18
00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:33,000
- Ball - - Ball -

19
00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:38,000
They need french to communicate with the people from outside,...

20
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:42,000
to communicate with other amerindians from French Guiana,..

21
00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:46,000
when they meet people, because they are very curious...

22
00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:50,000
...also of the different ways of other amerindian ethnies.

23
00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:53,000
She seems to be far away from the capital.

24
00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:56,000
But for these people living at the end of the world...

25
00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:00,000
who live mainly from handwork, the learning of french is also their future.

26
00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:04,000
For them it is a chance to get work...

27
00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:08,000
...and maybe, later on, when I am old, they can help me.

28
00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:14,000
There is not many teachers like Maëlle, who are attracted by adventure.

29
00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:19,000
Arriving here with a 4 year old son, she is now the mother of 3 children.

30
00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:26,000
School has finished. LIke every afternoon, the familiy goes to the river.

31
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:34,000
I just finished work, I'am holding my baby in my arms.

32
00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:38,000
I'am not loosing time trying to get to the nursing home in traffic jam.

33
00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:41,000
You see? - It is true!

34
00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,000
To start with their studies, these children have to leave their village...

35
00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:47,000
...but for the moment they don't have any intention...

36
00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:49,000
...to give up their stupendous playground.
